The EMT-basic certificate teaches you emergency skills such as respiratory, trauma and cardiac management skills, as well as patient assessment. When you graduate from the program, you must also pass a written and practical exam.

The highest level is the Paramedic certification. You will learn anatomy as well as advanced medical skills. At this point you will also attend a college and receive an associate’s degree once you complete the course, which can take up to two years. There is usually highly detailed coursework involved as well as clinical and field work.

Becoming licensed

You must become licensed to become an EMT or a Paramedic. Certification is given by the NREMT and some states have their own additional certifications.

Once you have gained your license, you must also maintain it every 2 years. This is done by ongoing training, courses and of course by your work experience.

Where will you work?

Most EMTs spend the majority of their time working for an emergency department of a hospital. Some of them are stationed in the hospital itself, but many of them are assigned to ambulance duty, where they respond to 911 calls. When a dispatcher orders an ambulance to the site of an emergency, the EMTs and Paramedics will leap to action and drive to the scene to provide the necessary vital care.
